Why Check Before Shipment

Problems are cheapest to fix before the goods leave. After shipping, a fault means returns, refunds or unsold stock. A short checklist catches most problems.

You can check the goods yourself, use an inspection company or ask the supplier for a checklist with photos. We send a written QC checklist and photos or video with every order.

Checking Garment Measurements

Measure chest, neck and back length on several pieces of each size. Compare the results with the size chart. Agree a tolerance with the supplier before production, such as 1 to 2 cm.

Knitwear stretches, so measure flat and without pulling. Check that each size steps up evenly from the size below.

Common Knit Faults

Look for dropped stitches, holes and loose yarn ends. Check that stripes and patterns line up at the seams. Hold the sweater to the light to see thin areas.

Check the colors against the approved sample in daylight. Colors can vary a little between yarn batches.

Seams and Finishing

Pull gently at the neck, leg openings and side seams. Seams should stretch with the knit and not break. Check that the leg openings are even and the right size.

Look for trims such as pom-poms, buttons and appliques. Pull each one to check it is firmly attached, because dogs may chew them.

Pilling and Washing

Rub a hidden area with your thumb for a few seconds. Heavy pilling at this stage will get worse with wear. Wash one piece by the care label and measure it again to check shrinkage.

Labels and Packing

Check that each piece has the right size, care and brand labels. Check barcodes on hangtags and polybags. Count the cartons and check the size mix against the order.

What to Ask the Supplier

Ask for the checklist, photos of each style and a carton count before the goods ship. See our quality control process for the checklist we use, the in-stock range for current styles, and the sizing guide for measurement points.

Washing tests also support your care label. The FTC guide complying with the Care Labeling Rule says each care instruction needs a reasonable basis.
